Educational essay writing

Posted on By Harun Mbijiwe 4 Comments on Educational essay writing
The term ‘essay’ is derived from a Latin word ‘exagium’, which might be translated as presenting one’s case? It is a short piece of writing representing one’s side of the argument in a story format. It gives the writer’s perspective on a certain subject or a question. Therefore, educational essays are educational writings where a writer argues his case in a story format. One gives the arguments to convince the reader to earn marks. Let us look at what it entails:

Introduction

No matter the kind of essay you are writing, whether short or long, it must start with captivating idea that will grab your reader’s attention and interest. It must suspend the reader to make one read the whole story. The first two sentences must start with a high note. Make sure in your intro the reader is able to join the dots but does not have a clear picture of the ending and would like to know what will happen. Your reader should know or at least have a clue of what you shall be discussing about in your introduction; this will be reader to understand the background and context of the topic.

Body

The body of any essay talks about the whole idea or a story in simple or complex paragraphs. Each paragraph or heading is expected to structure the essay. Each paragraph will address only one idea, an argument or an issue. You must discuss each paragraph at length leaving your reader with a clear picture on the subject of discussion. Suspense must be introduced towards the end so as to glue your reader to your essay.

Sentences.

Essay sentences must be short and precise. It must discuss the main idea directly or a sub-idea of the main idea of the paragraph. The sentences must create a smooth transition from one paragraph to another without breaks. They must be interwoven with good language structures to captivate your reader.

Vocabulary

The vocabulary in this case is the words of any language used in essay writing. It must deliver the message intended. In other words, it should be written with the reader in mind. Do not use very deep language words for a layman. The message won’t be delivered. Use of similes, metaphors, synonyms, personification and any other figurative language makes your essay captivating but don’t use too much, remember too much of everything is dangerous. The examiner is interested with your argument and you must communicate.

Conclusion

The conclusion must summarize the whole essay by drawing connections between arguments made in the subsequent paragraphs. The significance of the the statements is emphasized in this last paragraph. It must not contain new ideas, arguments or evidence. Any writer must keep in mind that it is the summing up of arguments made before hand. It must leave the reader with a suspense question but having answered all questions raised in the introduction.

Question analysis before starting your writing.

In analyzing the question and giving your best, there are several things you need to put into consideration.
  1. Make sure you know the characters involved. Know how many, their names if there are, their gender, social status and so on. Check the pronouns and nouns used. Example we, I, him, her, it, the doctor, teacher, student and so on. Let your theme revolve around these.
  2. Understand the activities involved in the question. Is it a fight, history of some people, birthday, burial, trip, fire breakout or a wedding. Revolve around that to capture the theme and be in topic. If there no activity introduce yours as per the question.
  3. Get to know the time involved. Is in the morning, afternoon, evening or at night, present or future. Build as much thoughts surrounding the time. If possible let it take the whole essay. Move out of time if only there is a need or the theme dictates so. Example if the activity or activities go a long way.
  4. Beware of the place or environment. Is the activity taking place at the hospital, road, market place, laboratory, classroom, school or home?
  5. Beware of the topic vocabulary. Let the vocabulary should revolve around that environment. Do not mix up the vocabulary. For example there are no people in a school set up, but we find teachers, tutors, principal, deans etc. In the hospital there are doctors, nurses, pharmacist etc.
  6. Check emotions. These include joy, sorrow, peace, fright and so on. Make sure you capture the right emotions for your essay as the theme unfolds.
Point of note: Twists are good in essay writing but you should be careful to veer from the topic. It might bring you down. If you are not conversant with such don’t hung yourself by introducing a twist. This will help you to write good essays that will give you good marks in your exams in many levels of education. For those who are doing thesis yours is more advanced than this. I thought it wise to concentrate on lower grades 4 to 12. Do research for thesis parse. God bless you.
